How to Apply

Step 1 – Submit an application

Volunteer applications are accepted electronically and in-person.

Online application
Eastern Heath provides a listing of some in-demand volunteer opportunities at eRecruit, volunteer opportunities. Just click the opportunity you are interested in and apply online.

In-person application
Individuals should submit their completed Volunteer Application Form (PDF) directly to the volunteer coordinator of their site of interest. A listing of sites and coordinators is available for the St. John’s metro area and for rural areas.

After you submit your completed form and your initial request is assessed, you will receive a reference form to provide two references.

Any questions regarding volunteer opportunities, or the application process, please reach out the volunteer coordinator of the site you are interested in volunteering.

Step 2 – Interview

Once your application has been received, you will be contacted for an interview. The interview is an opportunity to find out more about you and your interests and for you to ask questions about volunteering at Eastern Health.

Step 3 – Background Checks

All individuals who apply for volunteer placements at Eastern Health are required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening Certificate issued by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary within the last 6 months.

For volunteers interested in volunteering at a health-care facility in Rural Avalon, Clarenville, Bonavista or Burin, a criminal record check is completed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Please contact your local RCMP office or a volunteer office in your area for full details on how to obtain this check.

Step 4 – Health Screening

Health screening for health-care workers (including volunteers) is a requirement of the Public Health Agency of Canada. All individuals who apply for volunteer placements at Eastern Health are required to undergo health screening. Do not proceed with the health screening process until meeting with a volunteer coordinator.

Step 5 – The Volunteer Placement

When a successful match is made between your interests/abilities and an available position, the coordinator will offer you a volunteer placement. If you decide to accept this placement, the coordinator will discuss a start date with you.

Step 6 – Orientation & Training

Prior to starting your volunteer placement, you must complete the volunteer orientation. A coordinator or designate will give you a general orientation to the volunteer office (lockers, signing in/out, etc.) organizational policies and procedures and other pertinent information.

All volunteers must also complete Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) education.
