How long is the process to become a volunteer and what does it involve?
The volunteer application process varies by site and volunteer position. It will take a few weeks to complete everything including: an application form with references, an interview, screening, orientation and training.
What documentation is required to become a volunteer?
In addition to your application and references, you will need to submit:
- Parental consent for new volunteers who are not yet 18 years old.
- Immunization Record (this includes a valid TB test that will be arranged with the assistance of the Coordinator, Volunteer Resources).
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (this is arranged with the Coordinator, Volunteer Resources during your interview).
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Age requirements vary by site and volunteer assignment.
- Long-term Care – 14 years
- Acute Care – 16 years
- Children’s Health – 18 years
- Mental Health and Addictions – 18 years
- Palliative Care – 18 years
- Auxiliaries – 18 years
What is the minimum commitment required to be able to volunteer?
We ask volunteers to commit to at least three (3) hours per week. This will depend on your specific volunteer position. Please discuss your expectations and availability with the Coordinator, Volunteer Resources
What is the volunteer placement process?
Your interview is your opportunity to ask questions about volunteering. We will discuss your interests and availability in relation to our program’s need for volunteers. Ultimately your volunteer assignment will be a match between your interests, skills, talents and availability and program needs.
What can I expect from Volunteer Resources?
We commit to offering an experience that ensures volunteers work in a supportive and safe environment. We offer every volunteer an orientation and training, as well as, a detailed volunteer position description and recognition for your contributions and accomplishments.
What does Volunteer Resources expect from me?
We expect our volunteers to:
- Attend orientation and participate in training appropriate to their volunteer assignment.
- Abide by Eastern Health’s policies and procedures as they pertain to volunteers.
- Commit to and maintain your shift schedule.
- Contact your Coordinator, Volunteer Resources or designate if you are unable to attend your volunteer shift or if you intend to take a break from volunteering or if your availability changes.
- Stay in contact with your Coordinator, Volunteer Resources.
- Voice any questions or concerns.
Does Volunteer Resources help with job shadowing and other opportunities just for me?
No, Volunteer Resources does not arrange or monitor either job-shadowing or tailored volunteer roles.
May I take a break from volunteering (vacation or due to schedule changes)?
Absolutely! Your school, work and personal life will affect your volunteering at some point. Please update your Coordinator if you are going on vacation, if your schedule changes or if you just need a break. In some cases your volunteer shift will need to be covered for another volunteer, temporarily.
